ELSA Wellbeing
ELSA Information for Parents & Carers
Who are we and what do we do?
An ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a trained member of staff who supports children in developing their emotional literacy.
At Fishwick Primary School, our ELSA is Miss Anne-Marie Murphy.
She is based in the Pastoral Room, a calm, quiet, and safe space where children can talk, share their feelings, and feel supported. All ELSA sessions are carried out in this room.
What is Emotional Literacy?
Emotional literacy involves the ability to:
- Understand and manage our own feelings
- Recognise and respond to the feelings of others
- Build positive relationships
- Develop confidence and self-esteem
Children who are emotionally literate are better equipped to engage in learning and achieve their potential.
Areas the ELSA May Support
ELSA sessions may include support with:
- Recognising and understanding emotions
- Building self-esteem
- Developing social skills
- Friendship and peer relationships
- Managing anger and strong feelings
- Coping with loss, change, or bereavement
How Does ELSA Support Work?
- Children attend weekly sessions lasting 30–45 minutes.
- Support may be one-to-one or in small groups, depending on the child’s needs.
- Activities may include role-play, puppets, games, crafts, stories, and other creative tasks.
- Each session provides time to talk, share, and reflect.
- A child’s progress is reviewed termly.
How Can Parents and Carers Help?
You can support your child by:
- Informing the class teacher of any concerns or changes at home
- Encouraging your child to talk about their feelings
- Working closely with school staff to support your child’s emotional wellbeing
